Dear Oklahoma Tax Commission: Why did I get this letter?

Updated: May 2, 2023

Schedule an "Accounting" appointment and for a service fee of $25 we will be happy to handle this letter for you! Bring your blue packet and the letter with you to your appointment. The process will take approximately 15 minutes, depending on how many documents you have.

WHAT IS IT?

Oklahoma wants to verify the identity of the person who filed the tax return - they want to make sure you are you! The state is asking for original documents to be uploaded to their website to verify that you are the person with ownership of your tax documents to prevent any unscrupulous character from using your identity to file a fraudulent tax return.

WHY DID I GET THIS LETTER?

After speaking with other tax preparers in the state, the consensus is that 2023 has seen a huge increase in the number of letters being sent out. We do not have any information as to why this year is so special, but know that this process is used to keep your identity safe.

There are a number of factors that could trigger an identity verification requirement, but the state obviously does not want to make those factors public - those unscrupulous characters mentioned above would certainly find a way around the triggers! So, unfortunately, we cannot do anything special to your tax return to avoid a identity verification letter.

However, providing a valid driver's license or state ID is one way that we can help reduce the likelihood of getting selected. It isn't foolproof, but it is one step that we take to help our clients.

WHAT DO THEY WANT?

The letter is asking for income documents that show Oklahoma state withholding, listing specific forms. Additionally, they want the documents uploaded within thirty days of the issue date, which can be found in the upper-right corner of the letter.

WHAT DO I DO?

Open your blue packet and locate any income forms with Oklahoma state withholding. Then you can scan each document individually (or take a clear and readable picture with your phone). It is important to have each document saved individually for the process to be done correctly.

Then, visit the website indicated on the letter, oktap.tax.ok.gov

As the instructions state, locate the link for "Submit Documentation," then simply follow the prompts on the screen.

As of 04/14/2023, the link is in a box on the left side of the page, under the banner image and search bar. It looks like this:

CAN YOU HELP ME?
