Honoring History, Serving Community

Next week our country celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 21, and soon we will have Presidents Day on February 18. There is no national tradition associated with these holidays - no fireworks like the Fourth of July, nor a barbecue like Labor Day, but maybe there should be an annual tradition sparked by these days of remembrance. How could we best honor our country's history of empowering our citizens to fight for what is right?

Celebrate our nation's legacy by finding ways to serve your own community. You can volunteer at a senior's center or pet shelter; donate coats and socks to the needy; or, it could be as simple as helping a local business by referring their products and services to your friends and family.

I regularly donate the clothing that our family outgrows to a local thrift store, but from January 21 - February 18, we will be collecting items to donate to the Homeless Alliance. You are welcome to stop by our office to drop off new socks, gently used winter coats, and other items on the Homeless Alliance wishlist. I recommend stopping at your local thrift store and picking up a $10 coat, sweater, or jacket, but it could be as easy as picking up an extra toothpaste in the grocery store, and it would mean a great deal to a person in need.

Here are some websites that you can use to find other opportunities to help your community:

Mabel C Fry Public Library - call and ask if they have any opportunities, or if they can direct you to other organizations that need volunteers.
