We at Pelican are excited to meet all of our new clients in tax year 2019! Many of you will be brand new clients for us, hailing from the Yukon and surrounding area. Another good number of you will be previous clients of Kenny's from Eubanks Tax Service. No matter which of those groups you fall into, one thing will be true across the board. This is your first appointment at Pelican!
1. Scheduling your appointment.
At the time of writing this blog post, Pelican has just opened its doors, so we may be in and out of the office throughout December to finish preparing for tax season. However, our website and online scheduler are working, so you are free to go online to book an appointment. Otherwise, once we open after the holidays on the 2nd of January, feel free to give Addie a call to book your appointment over the phone.
Self-employed individuals benefit the most from being ready to go in the early days, as they can avoid longer wait times and have more flexibility to schedule their appointments, so you folks should head over to our booking page and select your appointment time sooner rather than later! You might consider scheduling a free consultation before tax season, to make sure that you will have all of the necessary documents ready.
2. What to Bring.
We are not allowed to bring any tax records with us from Kenny's previous employer to our new business in Yukon, so be sure to bring your last year's tax returns. If you are hoping to get a refund, your bank account information will allow us to set up your refund for direct deposit, so have your checkbook handy. Of course, we will also need all your relevant documents, such as: W2's, 1099's, Profit and Loss statements of businesses, identification, gambling W2Gs, unemployment forms, 1098T's for those claiming education credits, social security/TIN numbers, and dates of birth for all persons on the return. Dependents will need to have documentation that shows that they do reside with you (check out our post on claiming children!), and you and your spouse will need to provide us with government-issued ID. This could be a driver's license or a state-issued ID card.
Do NOT bring receipts. Instead, have totals and categories of the items on the receipts. However, we will gladly organize and tally your receipts if you would rather drop them off with us, but realize that there is an extra charge for this service, and it might delay the filing of your return if there is not time to do it at your appointment.
3. The appointment.
Face to face appointments take an average of 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the type and number of returns being completed. Tax filings that take advantage of our drop off service usually take anywhere from 3 to 5 days once all the information is gathered.
At the end of your appointment, you will be given a copy of the tax paperwork as well as a link to retrieve your documents online should the copy be lost. Once the appointment is over, and payment is received or arranged, your taxes will be electronically filed via Drake Software, and sent to the IRS. From there, it takes about 10 days on average for refunds to come in. Those who owe will have until the tax deadline of April 15th to either pay in full or set up a payment arrangement, and to make their first payment.
We are looking forward to meeting everyone this year, and can't wait to get started! Thank you for your support and patronage!
